Your Beauty is Deeper Than Pretty

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure to get the men and women of The Retreat Day Spa and Salon in Corvallis, OR in front of my camera. We spent 4 days strait of shooting and I can honestly say I enjoyed every minute of it. Everyone was kind and friendly and I got to eat free food which is always a bonus!

What struck me the most, and I don't know if I am going to be able to articulate exactly what I mean here, was the theme of beauty. (Ok, I guess that weak, I mean I was shooting stylists, but be kind.) Here I was shooting all these amazingly gorgeous women (and men) and the theme of beauty was overwhelming. I don't want to write that beauty is not what is on the outside, only because everyone says this. Don't get me wrong, I whole heartedly believe it. I just need a new take.

Beauty is visual. But beauty is not pretty. It is deeper. More lovely. Beauty is watching Sheryl fix a sandwich for me with such precision she could have been a surgeon because she cared that I ate something wonderful. Beauty is watching Debi walk into the salon with a smile as wide the Willamette showering encouragement on every face she saw because she wants them to feel loved. Beauty is glowing as I see Megan overflow with joy because that is who she is. Beauty is listening to Peg talk about her children and in that moment seeing her eyes light up with excitement because her love for them is fierce (and not the Tyra Banks kind of fierce.) Beauty is my husband looking at me with that, "I love you" look. Beauty is seeing my 5 year old deeply hug her great-grandma. Beauty is watching a dear friend be baptized. Beauty is looking down and seeing a baby asking YOU to hold her.

Beauty is all around us. We have to accept it. We have to watch out for it. Find it. Where will you find beauty today or tomorrow? Look for it. Don't let it pass you by. Take note! And for pity sake... (and I am talking to me here too) stop shaming yourself because you're not a VS model!! Your beauty is deeper than pretty.

Not long ago our big girl Erin learned how to ride a two wheeled bike without training wheels. It was a very exciting day for everyone full of frustration, smiles, giddiness and a few skinned knees. It just so happened that the day she and Curt went out to attempt to ride the bike I had an amazing lens I was renting so I approached the moment as if I were doing a portrait session.

Result... I fell in love with these pictures and I am so thankful I have this moment captured with really great pictures.

So, here is my idea I need feedback on. More and more I have been taking family portraits. In fact, I would say it makes up about 80% of my total work. What if these portraits were timed around my clients firsts. For example... first time riding a bike, first lost tooth, first steps, first time driving, getting your license, first day of school, new puppy at home, first time making dinner. There are so many firsts in life. What about for adoptive parents first time walking in your home with your new baby or even first time meeting your baby (if we could figure out the logistics.)

Of course portraits would also be taken, but it would be centered around a first. Then after the "first" is documented we could move on to portraits.

I would love to know your thoughts. Would you want something like this? Would you be willing to pay for it? I know the logistics could be an issue for some of the ideas so if you have any thoughts on that I would love to hear them. Thank you for your input!

The Davison Kids

These are the Davison kids and I known them since the youngest was 3... which makes me feel phenomenally old. I got a call from Megan (in the middle in the above photo) and she wanted to do pictures of all the kids as a gift for their parents for Christmas. We had to get everything done in a day. The photos were taken, edited and printed all within 12 hours, but we got it done!!! :)

I have so many, many memories of these kids. Tyler was in the JH youth program we volunteered in and was always hysterical, though I may remember a few times he made some of the girls cry. His whit was a little sharper than his age showed. He is very creative and fun and was a total sport for these pictures.

Megan, or Nutmeg, as she wanted be called when she was 8 years old is also very creative. She now has a booming cliental as a nail technician at The Retreat in Corvallis. Megan was always kind and exuberant. Megan also has a bit of a sharp whit to her. (I wonder where they get that... Randy??). Megan did an amazing job of organizing her siblings for this shoot and sat by me through the entire editing process, printing and following through with getting the frames. Well done Nutmeg!!

Carly. Carly, Carly, Carly. Carly has energy. Lots of it. Lots and lots of it. She would RUN across the church sanctuary every Sunday to welcome our arrival. I also remember these words spoken over and over again when were at their home in the evening. "Carly, go to bed. Carly, go to bed. CARLY! GO TO BED!!!!" Carly has a catching laugh and will make you smile even when you don't want to. She is quite a softball player and can sing VERY well!!

All talented kids. I am blessed to have watched them grow up. Thank you for letting me document this time of your lives. I love all you guys!!

My Friends the Gurney's

I have been waiting to have the chance to write about this awesome family, the Gurney family. Hands down this is the most fun, most generous family I have EVER had the privilege of knowing. I met Leann through a play group. We hit it off and have had fun cycling together (when I get my booty out of bed), vacationing together, crying to each other about the woes of parenting, drinking wine, laughing, teasing and enjoying one another's company.

The adjective I would most use to describe this family is generous.

They have blessed our lives in so many ways with their spirit of giving. Leann has blessed me with her thoughtfulness when I have been sick with

gatorade and a People magazine and when I don't

think I can take another day of whining children just blesses me by listening. She blesses me with coffee, hand-me-down shoes, trips away, cabinets in our garage, dinners all together gabbing about the Beavers, a great shoulder to lean on, good conversation and an amazing friend.

AND Leann is soooo funny! I have always thought that no one could compete with my husband's sharp whit, but I think Leann could take him! She is smart, sassy and fun! I just adore her. Michael is kind and funny and makes me feel comfortable. AND the BEST thing about shooting this family (in the non-lethal way of cou

There are times I ask families to play together and they don't know what to do. But not this family. It is so impressive. Michael and Leann you inspire me to do better with my kids. To enjoy them more. To let them play in puddles. To take them as they are, right now, loving life as only a child can. Thank you for your perspective. Mostly thank you for friendship. The Hadlocks

They are the most active family I know. They are vibrant and alive and FULL of energy! These people you see before you are the Hadlocks and I have had the privilege of knowing them for about 12 years. Mike caught the guarder at our wedding and Rebekah wore it two weeks later at their wedding. We have known Silas since he was a baby and gave him his first piece of candy. I cried to Rebekah numerous times when after years of trying to have our own child we could not. We were at the hospital hours after Avi was born and we watched as Curt tenderly held their baby girl and looked into her eyes. Little did we know that one year later he would be holding our own baby girl in the exact same birthing room.

I write all of this to say, we have history with the Hadlocks. Curt went to HS with both of them at CHS. Where, by the way, they were HS sweethearts. (All together... Ahhhhhhh) They are genuine and fun and I am "uber" comfortable around them. They challenge my thinking and they encourage me to get off my booty and get moving.

Thank you Hadlocks for your of friendship, your role in our lives and for blessing our family in so many ways. I love you all.

The Hohensee's!

I am so excited to write to you about the very first adoptive free session I was able to do! (I really need to think of a better name for this.) These images are of the Honensee's who not long ago adopted a baby boy. They were there the day he was born and have an open adoption with the birth mom and are loving having a second boy in their home. This little man has been a great compliment to the Honensee home, as he LOVES to sleep. Truly a blessing from above. Congratulations to this remarkable family. Thank you for allowing me to "shoot" you. I pray God blesses you with many restful nights and love beyond your imagination. Thank you!

After about 10 minutes of pictures Mark looked at me and said, "OK. So we're done, right?" Ha, ha Mark, you don't get off that easy! We had a great time shooting for close to an hour at a park in Albany. We had a good time playing at the park and then this sweet little gem announced that she no longer wanted to wear her white dress, but rather, she wanted to put on her black dress and ride her bike. So, that is what we did. Thanks so much for an easy going, fun day!

Tiffany and Jeff

Tiffany and Jeff were married at the beautiful Ranch on Beaver Creek in Lebanon. It was an early evening wedding and the lighting during the ceremony was GORGEOUS. Tiffany was the epitome of a beautiful bride. She glowed. Her bridesmaids were some of the sweetest group of girls I have ever been around and the love that is shared between Jeff and Tiffany is sweet and genuine. Though on the surface Tiffany and Jeff appear to be opposites (a log truck driver and a sassy hair stylist) I learned that they "get each other." Which is pertinent to a healthy, happy marriage.

Though I missed their dog, Woody, being at the wedding, it was full of fun, unique "Tiff-and- Jeff-isms."

Congratulations Tiff and Jeff. Here is to years and years of loving one another well.

This is Jessica and her adorable family. Jessica is a very talented stylist who I met through The Goddess Experience. (See link for more information.) We met at a park nearby for what we hoped would be a fun time for their son and a perfect time to catch some great smiles from him. But unfortunately Colton wasn't feeling up to smiling. He was sad and frustrated and we all decided that it would just have to be a non-traditional shoot. (Which are my favorites anyway.) Turns out, Colton started throwing up the next day was probably not feeling real up to having his picture taken. So, for as poor as he felt he really did a very good job.

And FYI, almost every family I shoot says to me, "We are probably the toughest family to shoot." Everyone says it and really, the best pictures come when there are tough moments.

So, to all you families who think you could never have a family portrait taken because it would just be too tough... YOU"RE WRONG!!! I just like to think of them as portraits with character and personality. Non-traditonal portraits.

This is my baby girl Erin Hope. I LOVE this picture because I have visions of her in Hawaii when she is 25 playing the guitar on the beach and enjoying the relaxing nature life can provide. (You know, like Jack Johnson.) I love this picture because it is obvious there is so much joy in her eyes. I love this picture because it is obvious she is having fun. OK, so it is obvious from the pictures that this is a gorgeous family! But they are also really cool. They traveled from Roseburg for their pics (because I am that good **swipe dust off shoudler**SARCASM HERE) No, they are good friends with a good friend of mine and so it was a day trip to get pictures and hang out. We had an awesome time being together with all the families after the shoot. The kids played and we had fun laughing and eating good food.

The boys were great at the shoot, except that the littlest man didn't like the feel of the grass when he crawled and only wanted to be on the concrete. Thanks so much for a great time again. Let me know when you decide to move here so we can hang out and drink coffee all day long!

My Friend Mandy and Her Family

This is my good friend Mandy and her family. Mandy is one of the most talented, kindest, most gorgeous (inside and out ladies and gents), greatest people ever! We had sooo much fun taking these pictures. This is only the beginning, but at least it will show you, Mandy, what we are working with. Pretty easy subjects. (Even Ace and Jax.) By the way, I am totally in love with their dog Jax who I believe has the wisest eyes I have ever peered into. This is Jill and there were just too many good ones to share of her, so dear internet you have lots to look at. Let me start by saying, what a totally gorgeous girl! And so, so kind! She was even kind enough to baby sit for me for... 10 hours!! Yes, 10 hours! It was a long day for dear Jill. Jill and I had a ball going all of her property and the town she lives in and found numerous places to shoot at. We drove past one spot and I began to oooo and ahhh over it and Jill said, "That's my grandma's house!" Classic. So of course we pulled over and shot there too. Miracle Child

This is Bekah. Bekah is special for a number of reasons. First she has the MOST amazing hair I have ever seen. Little ringlets just like Shirley Temple, but they weren't created by a curling iron. I was praying for Bekah when she was only days old. She was born an extreme preemie and spent a long time in the NICU before she could come home to her Mom and Dad. I received regular updates on her health via e-mail and day by day Bekah got stronger and more ready to adapt to life outside a hospital.
To see Bekah, almost 3 years old now, running around and playing and eating ice cream did my heart well. She is alive and thriving and having the chance to try new treats like lollipops and ice cream and receive love from her Mom and Dad. She has the chance to live life to the fullest. My favorite quote is, "I want my everyday to make God bellylaugh. Glad that He gave life to someone who knows the difference between life and half life."--Shauna Neiquist. That is what I think of when I think of Bekah.
I had to call a friend to ask how to spell Bekah's name and felt an internal smile when I heard it was the "h" ending. I have been told that in Hebrew the "h" means breath of God. Indeed her name is spelled appropriately. Bekah your life breaths life into mine. Thank you.

Baby

This precious little one is only 5 days old... and look at all that hair! Not only does she have a lot of it, but it is also really thick! This little girl is the third little miss to the Loftins. We know the Loftins because Erin started pre-school two years ago with their oldest little girl, Alyssa. Erin and Alyssa are the best of friends and ran a muck together at two pre-schools, but will be separated this year because, sadly, the Loftins are moving. *sniff* We will miss them so much! But I know you will have a great time in your new home, just be sure and visit us often and we can get the girls to be pen pals. (Do they even do that anymore?) Or e-mail buddies or something. We love you guys!

They were light and lively and so much fun! AND, best of all they didn't mind having their picture taken. I know I keep saying this, but this senior/family was ridiculously easy to shoot! Where? Want?

I often start a thought process but then get distracted by everyday life and never return to complete my brilliant thinking. Not today. Well, at least I am not going to forget to follow the thinking through to its conclusion. It may take me years to complete this task as I have already been interrupted twice. (Once to get a toy up high and once to complete the potty task.)

I digress, I will at least start my thinking. How big do I want this business to get? Really. I was reading the blog of the most fabulous photographer ever, Jasmine Star, and as I read some of her oldest posts she was obviously soooo driven! And now she is famous. I mean, I totally look up to her--this makes her famous right? :)

So, when she started out what was her ultimate goal? Did she want to be really busy? Did she want to be famous? Did she want to teach seminars? Did she want to hone her skills and never stop learning? Did she want to have thousands of people stalk her blog? If that is what she wanted she has totally succeeded. (Not saying that ANY of this is bad thing it isn't. I am inspired by people like Jasmine who find a goal and go after it.) Which leads me to my question... what do I want? Do I want to shoot 35 weddings in one year? Do I want to teach seminars? Do I want to write books? Really, if I dream big with the only thing stopping me is me, then where is my limit? What do I want?

I need to write out my ultimate goals for my photography and start going after them, but what are they?

I will start here...

I want to bless people with portraits they wouldn't normally be able to afford.
I want to give free portrait sessions to those who have just adopted.
I want to be able to pay for my camera equipment from what I earn through the business.
I want to have time for my kids, husband, family and friends.
I want to never stop LOVING photography.
I want to be able to go to Europe with friends in 5 years with the money I get from photography.
I want to be recolonized as a great photographer.
I want to go to the Jasmine Star workshop.
I want to go to lots of workshops.
I want to be a technically sound photographer.
I want to be an artistic photographer.
I want to learn and grow and get better and better.
I never want to stop learning about photography.
I want to have great photos for my kids to have in their wedding slide shows. Photos that aren't just pretty, but tell their story.

Kicked Out Again!

Well after getting kicked out of the first location in Portland we decided to move to another spot that was more photographer friendly. Lewis and Clark College... it's beautiful and free! BUT... they are not so keen on having portraits taken. We got the boot after about 10 minutes. But, this family was awesome! No sweat... after an upbeat conversation on where to go we decided on a downtown area. Upon arrival in beautiful downtown Lake Oswego we discovered it was PACKED! But, once again, this family made do and we found numerous small spots to take pictures.

Thank you so much you guys for a fun, EASY (despite no love for photographers in PDX), shoot. Your boys were a joy and you two were tops! (How old do I sound right now?...old.) No really you were so easy to be around, get along with and I greatly enjoyed your company. (And the milkshake too!--Thank you!) Enjoy the photos, the complete disc is in the mail!

The Turco's

It was on this gorgeous day in July I learned a valuable lesson in photography. Always get permission to be at your location! The Turco family and I met at a gorgeous location in Portland called The Bishop's Close. Gorgeous home. Gorgeous gardens. We wasted no time and got right into shooting. About a half way into a very smooth shoot we were approached by a younger woman, looking a little nervous if I do say so myself, asking if we knew about the fee for photography on the grounds. Having NO idea about any fee I said, "No, I didn't know. How much is it?" I was hoping to throw 10 bucks her way and continue on our excursion.

But, no, it was not a measly $10, she informed that it ranged from $50-$300! Only charging $150 for the whole shoot (disc included) I informed her of this--hoping she would pitty the fledgling photographer and let me continue. She gave me a shrug and said, "you're done."

BUT, we still got some great shots! So, ha! Girl who had to follow the rules! (I mean, how dare you follow the rules where you work! What? Do you actually want to KEEP your job or something?)

All joking aside, we had a great time and well, the shoot didn't take us long. :) Here are a few shots of the day. It is unbelievable how big these kids are getting. And this little man is getting so handsome! Joe and Brittany, thank you for being so easy going and for being so supportive of my new business. I really, really appreciate it!!

Amanda and Ryan

Today it was hot. Now for some of you reading this you might think, well, yeah--she's from Oregon, anything over 85 is hot to her. While this may be true ('cause I am a heat wuss) the Willamette Valley (according to my car thermometer) reached a scorching 108 degrees!!! Unheard of for us raining weather folk!

And it is on this day at 12:30 pm at Bush Park in Salem that Ryan and Amanda committed to do life with one another. I am sooo impressed with this couple. They are so obviously in love and although it was hotter than the underside of boiling tea kettle they continued to hug and kiss and love up on each other. Bravo you two.

Add to that... Ryan gave one the most thoughtful and gracious toasts I have ever heard. He thanked his Mom for teaching him how to treat a girl, he thanked his family for supporting them through planning a wedding in 3 weeks and he told a story of a wish he made years ago over a wishbone. He had never told anyone what he wished for until today. He shard today because his wish came true. He wished to commit his life to Amanda.Amanda held Ryan's gaze so deeply during the vows it was palpable. She meant every word that came from her mouth. (I do have a picture of this and you will see what I am saying, but no time to edit yet.)

Even though I have only spent a few hours with you two it was such an honor to shoot your wedding and have a chance to be a part of your day. Thank you!

You have to look carefully at this first picture. This photo was taken at OSU (Go Beavs!) and if you look in this eye you can see the MU!!! It is crazy and cool at the same time. GO BEAVS! (Oh, did I already say that?) I have titled this, "Eye On The Future" (GO BEAVERS!!)

This handsome couple is the Greene's. I have known them since college, which was way too long ago and it was a total joy to take their portraits the other day. They now have three beautiful and feminine little girls who fill their days with both glory and trial (as all children do.)
I have to give mad props and kudos and atta-boys to Sean for being the easiest man I have EVER photographed. Thank you for enjoying your time, being easy going and generally having a good time.
The Greene's are great because they know how to have fun! Leiah was sassing it up photos and the interaction between the two (Sean and Leiah) was almost stand-up worthy! Hot Dogs and Sass!

We open with the "dream portrait." That's right the hot dog. When Reagan found out she would be getting her picture taken she very quickly decided she needed a portrait with the ever-famous hot dog in downtown Albany. So, here it is world, the hot dog picture. Reagan, I hope you love it. We went out today and had a great time walking around and finding all kinds of places to snap away. Reagan was soooo thrilled to be in front of the camera. Tyra would have been very happy with her "fierce" moves. And... man... this girl has got some sass! You will see in the pictures below. Owen, you were a trooper. You tired on cool shoes and I even managed to capture a few images with you smiling!! Leann, thank you for wanting to capture who your kids truly are right now. Mike and Eva

This is Mike and Eva. I met Eva several years ago when I was a way too regular customer at a local coffee shop. (She worked there.) We would chat on a daily basis and before you know it we had become great friends. Eva is amazing. She is generous and kind and funny. She has very much become a little sister to me. I feel protective of her, I trust her and I know we will know each other for the rest of our lives (despite where we may live.)
Although I don't know Mike as well as I know Eva, what I do know of him is awesome! He treats Eva soo well. He respects her. He is kind to her. He watches out for her. So, Mike, as Eva's sort of big sister... I approve! You impress me more each time I meet you. I am so excited you two will be married soon, I know you will learn and grow and be better people because of your marriage. Congratulations!
And oh, thanks for letting me take your pics. You both are "ridiculoulsly-good-looking."

Chase The Rock Star

This is Chase. Despite the fact that Chase is only 5 he is a TOTAL Rock Star! These pictures actually run in the opposite order they are posted. Unfortunately for Chase it was a cold morning and he was not thrilled about getting his picture taken. But, we worked through that and ended up with some great images! Enjoy.

When I asked Nicole to give me three discriptive words about herself she said, "Mild... creative and I can't think of a third. You'll have to ask my mom." And although Nicole was very mellow we also captured some not so mild moments as well. We had soooo much fun and in about an hour and a half came out with a lot of memories. Nicole even found me a perfect chair for my budding business! Thanks Nicole! I still have editing to do, but here are some of my favorites.

This is Naomi. Naomi may be the easiest subject I have ever had the privilege of "shooting." (That still sounds very weird to me.) In any case, this little girl followed the camera where ever it went. Stared right into it. She was even so relaxed she took a little snooze. She was a joy. And let me say this now, because I know you're going to ask... NO, I did not increase the blue color of her eyes. The lighting was gorgeous... and so are her eyes. Enjoy.

The Goddess Girls

These are the Goddess Girls, actually this is Gage and the Goddess Girls. The Goddess Girls (as I call them) are three ladies who have joined together to show women of all ages and stages of life that they hold deep beauty. The concept is a day of pampering and feeling amazing about yourself! Full hair and makeup and then a gorgeous photo session! AND you get your edited images on a CD!!!
Jenni and Jess do an amazing job with hair and makeup and Adrienne (a wedding coordinator) is there to make sure the day runs smoothly.
I was fortunate enough to take the promotional pictures for this new business. Gage, the puppy, was brought out by his owner into the alley way for a little potty break and we could NOT pass up the opportunity to have three lovely ladies with a cute little puppy. A Shoot To Remember

I recently asked a client, "What kind of portraits are you hoping to get out of the shoot?" Her response was, "I just want to capture a moment." And that is exactly what happened on my most recent shoot. I was out with these two adorable children who were not being too cooperative getting together for a photo, so when the big brother started to pick up the little sister the mom and I looked at each other and she said, "Oh just let him go for it. She'll be fine."

Well, as soon as the big broski got a good hold of his precious little sister he turned himself almost 180 degrees and briskly dumped her into a nasty, marshy, duck pond! We truly captured a moment! Lil' sis only cried for a few minutes and then was ready to play again. Mom continued to smile and laugh, despite her best efforts to hide the smiles while discipling. It was amazing! Thank you for a shoot I will never forget!!
